About the Event

Tuberculosis was one of the early big public health crises in Chicago. Also known as the White Plague, this devastating infection took the lives of thousands of Chicagoans at the turn of the century.

Fortunately, in 1915 the city opened the Chicago Municipal Tuberculosis Sanitarium, a state-of-the-art facility that offered hope and fresh air to all Chicagoans, free of charge.

This hour-long talk will be a virtual tour of the grounds of the old Sanitarium as it stands today, and as we travel through it we'll go over the history of TB in Chicago and the eventual treatment created that greatly reduced mortality.

The talk will be led by Leyla Royale, local historian and professional tour guide part of the Effing Chicago collective.

This event is FREE with donations suggested/welcome.

The talk will be broadcast on Facebook Live via Effing Chicago.

EFFING CHICAGO is a collective of professional tour guides behaving badly. Breaking away from corporate restrictions on uniforms, language, and what stories to tell, on an Effing Chicago tour your guide might swear, rip on people who put their names on their buildings in two-story letters, and show up to work in a hoodie. The only rule is to stay accurate!

LEYLA ROYALE is an all-about-town woman who's worked as a tour guide in Chicago since 2011. She specializes in movie palace history and finding strange, forgotten tales from Chicago's past of murder, crime, accidents, and how terribly unsafe the bridges were. In 2014, she started DEAD IN CHICAGO as a daily true horror history website. It ran for 1,000 days and currently is revived a few times a year for virtual tours. Visit deadinchicago.com to learn more.
